51°µĶųā€™s current Art Gallery exhibition, Photos of Children/Photos of Youth: Period and Contemporary Photographs, on the Portland Campus, was the focus of a glowing review published by the Sun Journal on March 10.

According to the article, the exhibition provides ā€œan excellent selectionā€ of 100 photographs that ā€œremind us ā€¦ that children are our most important natural resource.ā€

The exhibit, curated by Professor Emeritus Stephen Halpert, showcases both period and contemporary photos selected from the Universityā€™s archives as well as loaned pieces. While the photographs focus on children from all over the globe, most of the images have ties to Maine. Many were taken by Maine artists working today.

Anne Zill, gallery manager, was interviewed by the Sun Journal. ā€œIt has been an honor to work with Halpert. He is an outstanding curator,ā€ she said.

The review mentions several of the exhibitā€™s photographs by name as standouts, including ā€œAdult and Child in Israelā€ by Judy Glickman Lauder, ā€œLa Salle Street at Amsterdamā€ by Todd Webb, ā€œRefugee Campā€ by Robert Pennington, ā€œChildren at the Merrillā€ by Diane Hudson, ā€œPeakā€™s Islandā€ by Arthur Fink, ā€œTwo girls by the Truckā€ by Jack Montgomery, ā€œEagle Islandā€ by Jon Edwards and ā€œMinerā€™s Childrenā€ by Berenice Abbott.

ā€œThe whole place is like a small gem that sparkles with creativity,ā€ the review says of the Art Gallery.
