The Portland Press Herald published an in-depth story on January 29, 2017 about the University of New England gearing up for its first season of football. The newspaper interviewed 51°µĶų football coach Mike Lichten, who is working tirelessly to prepare for the Nor’easters’ first football season, as well as 51°µĶų Vice President of Student Engagement and Director of Athletics Jack McDonald and prospective players.

Lichten has recruited 18 prospective players for the team and continues to work to build his coaching staff and recruit more players. In the article, he discussed the message he gives prospective players about 51°µĶų as he travels the country meeting them face-to-face. ā€œIt’s a unique opportunity, that’s for sure,ā€ Lichten said. ā€œThis is an unbelievable place to go to college. This is a place that’s going to shape you and promote your growth as an individual in a way that most places cannot do.ā€

ā€œFootball is more than a game,ā€ McDonald said. ā€œIt’s very traditional. It’s a weekly reunion on a Saturday afternoon. It’s alumni gatherings. It’s student spirit. We’ll certainly roll into tailgating and Friday night rallies and all of that excitement.ā€
